Des Keaney

Deep Blue Sea Kayaking is run by Des Keaney. Des runs the courses, supplies training and advice and has first hand knowledge of our extensive range of boats and equipment.

Des began paddling 30 years ago and has been commercially involved in sea kayaking for five years. Des is an active paddler, on the water over 200 days a year and with thousands of miles under his paddles.

Des is a prominent member of the Irish national sea kayaking body, the Irish Sea Kayaking Association. He currently sits on the committee and in the past has been editor of association's newsletter, Treasna na dTonnta.

Des is the editor of and has contributed significantly to Oileáin, the guide to Ireland’s coastline and islands, written by David Walsh and published in 2004.

A natural mentor, Des takes great pleasure in nurturing and developing new paddlers with his easy going unflappable approach and giving them the skills and confidence to become leaders in their own right.  He is deeply committed to bringing new paddlers into the sport and growing the sea kayaking community. As part of this he set up the Dublin based East Coast Sea Kayaking Club of which he was Chairman from 2002-2008.

Complimenting his wealth of paddling experience he has the following formal qualifications:

o Irish Canoe Union (ICU) Level 5 Personal Proficiency

   o Level 1, Level 2, Level 3 and Level 4 Instructor

o British Canoe Union (BCU) and ICU Level 5 Coach Aspirant

o First Aid REC3 with particular emphasis on first aid in outdoor adventure sports.

Des's sea kayaking travels have included New Zealand, Scotland, Wales, France, Spain, Chile, Argentina and the glorious west coast of Ireland with its tidal races, beautiful islands, marine life and untouched beaches. In 2008, he led a group which successfully got around Cape Horn at the southernmost tip of South America.

Our favorite paddling haunts

 Close to home:

  • the dramatic coastline of Bray Head and the long tranquil stretches of Greystones North Beach
  • the active, changeable waters of Dalkey Sound and the Muglins Sound in South Dublin. Channeling the tide in two narrow constrictions, Dalkey can be an exciting challenge.
  • the wild islands of Skerries - St.Patricks, Colt, Shenick and remote Rockabill, a craggy lump of rock four miles off the nearest land. Skerries is a great winter favourite, with hosts of seals, owls, seabirds and even the occasional otter.

Further afield:

  • Connemara
  • Donegal
  • The Blasket Islands
  • The Aran Islands
  • Cliffs of Moher
  • Achill Island
